Arashiyama, a famous Kyoto beauty spot, is almost as magnificent clad in its crimson autumn maples as it is in the cherry blossoms of spring. Hiroshige depicts the cherry blossoms when they are just beginning to wilt and strayleaves float down to the river. A man stops for a smoke on the bank and watches the two boatmen as they pole their way down the river.

Men and women enjoy a drink and smoke inside small shops. Slashing black rain pouring from clouds on the mountain and cutting sharp paths across the reddish sky clearly indicates the sudden nature of the storm. This print brings something of the spirit of Edo into the Kyoto scene, and though it perhaps carries less emotional charge than some of his more poetic works nevertheless, aesthetically this is a very excellent landscape.

The chill blue of the stone gate and fence and the high-piled downy snow delicately balance the warmth of the group of women talking or laughing between themselves. Hiroshige clearly recognized the effectiveness of woodblock printing to portray snow scenes.

One of the best known places in Kyoto provides the setting for an amusing and human print. One of the sightseers, having tippled too much sake, is causing teahouse girls some concern, while a second, more refined individual points with rapt interest at the delicately drawn temple and pagoda, afloat in a pale sea of flowers. The careful workmanship of this series is of a consistent and high quality.

Kyoto town life and culture centered around the Kamo River and this area around Shijogawara. There would be a sophisticated atmosphere to moon-viewing parties or groups who watched the giant yearly bonfires. It was an atmosphere of culture and charm, of happiness and sorrow-combinations that were the foundation and the essence of a way of life.
