The long row of pine trees line the coast of the Lake Biwa. Many fishing boats with white sails float on the lake, on the clear day. The Mt. Hiei on the background and the row of pine trees make a most admired scene.

This is a calm and elegant scene of a fishing village with a white roof of the Ukimodo in the afterglow. Probably Hiroshige who visited Lake Biwa enjoyed boating hereabout. The widely expanded space is shown by means of slight gradations of colors, putting boats in a slant direction in front of the viewer.

No sign of human life and sheets of dark rain enveloping the old, spreading pine tree makes this a picture of desolation. The old tree has died and today a new pine florishes in its place.

Several returning sails to Yabase port of the Lake Biwa between willowtrees in the foreground and the Mt. Hiei in the distance, on the evening glow sky. The scenery is magnificent.

Though some critics find fault with the foreground perspective and point out that the bright color of the lake does not harmonize with the remainder of the print. The white sky area effectively offsets the craggy, masculine mountain peaks.
