Daruma is said to portray an ancient Chinese Zen master, Bodai Daruma. It's a limbless doll, and it has been popular in Japan since Edo era. Because of its low center of gravity, Daruma doll always rests in standing position, and therefore, it symbolizes recoveries from misfortune. Today, many politicians buy a Daruma when they start their election campaign.
