Hemp Tapestry--Musashi Miyamoto's Gorin no Sho

The characters on this tapestry are called "Bon-ji," and originated in India in the 6th-9th centuries. In Japanese Buddhism, these characters are often used to represent Buddha.

The five characters written on this tapestry (read from top to bottom) are: earth, water, fire, wind and sky. These are the titles of the five volumes of a book written by Miyamoto Musashi, a famous swordsman who lived in the 16th & 17th centuries.
